Dear All

A further note on "the classic" - particularly for Jameela...Italo Calvino's definitions of same in NYRB (http://www.nybooks.com/articles/archives/1986/oct/09/why-read-the-classics/): 6) A classic is a book that has never finished saying what it has to say.

I'm just off to bed, but the phrase "patient of interpretation" (as a description of the classic's capacity for pluralization) comes to mind. I'll have a bit more of a think tomorrow...

Sorry, Matt. I was hardly clear. I was just wondering if you had any zinger quotations from Kermode's book, as I would not have the time to be able to read it any time soon.

On the other hand, I probably _will_ now remember to read it, so if you are similarly strapped for time, even what you've said has served.

Sorry, Jameela: from whom, and concerning what, exactly?? The idea of the classic as always somehow contemporary?? (Or, as I think Kermode has it, "enduring," which may well be via Benjamin, in which case it has connotations of "patient suffering," of undergoing some kind of ordeal....)...??

Jameela, the interesting notion you float sounds very much like what is perhaps the central idea of Frank Kermode's The Classic. I take it he counts (as a Miltonist, that is).

Pound said: Poetry is news that stays news.

And by that, of course, he meant great poetry.

Carter,

You make me wonder if the definition of a classic work of literature should include the notion that it is always somehow current, but I imagine that this has been said, and even said by Miltonists.
