[Milton-L] that fruit (Blake is probably drawing a black locusttree)

The fruit is there, Jeffery, but it's not the fruit of the black locust (which is a long snow-pea-like pod): http://www.fcps.edu/islandcreekes/ecology/black_locust.htm. The tree does seem to be what Blake was working from, though.

I didn't see the fruit at that link.

Have a look at this site, all, especially the pendulous yellow fruit pictured at the bottom. Fitting that the black locust can be poisonous:

Interesting, John: but then what do you make of those tree-trunks? (Having seen my ex stabbed by the vicious thorns on a black locust tree, and had that unhappy experience myself, I think Blake's rendition of both fruit and tree is more psychological than representational--and the Fruit is intended to evoke nothing we recognize because it's nothing that grows in the fallen world.)

Here's a picture of the honey locust tree's thorns, which are similar:

A side-light on the fruit-debate might be seeing what illustrators have done with it. Could Blake's be a passion-fruit, aha and oho?
