[Milton-L] that fruit (Blake is probably drawing a black locust tree)

Interesting, John: but then what do you make of those tree-trunks? (Having seen my ex stabbed by the vicious thorns on a black locust tree, and had that unhappy experience myself, I think Blake's rendition of both fruit and tree is more psychological than representational--and the Fruit is intended to evoke nothing we recognize because it's nothing that grows in the fallen world.)

Here's a picture of the honey locust tree's thorns, which are similar:
