For whatever it's worth: I've always been a one tree (of Knowledge) woman myself. I don't think Milton would have made something so critical to the narrative that ambiguous,  and if memory serves, it's the tree (not the fruit, per se) that Eve recognizes when the Serpent guides her to it. Something had to make that particular tree distinct from all others, given the vastness and overabundance of Eden.
