Jim R,

You may choose to disregard Satan’s own soliloquy (“Me miserable! ...Which
way I fly is Hell; my self am Hell”). But he does not escape eternal
torment. We leave him writhing in pain and humiliation in Book 10, and in
Book 12 we learn he will end up chained in Hell for good. Those are the
“facts of the text.” The poem does not end with Book 4.
