Why not go all the way and suggest it wasn't Milton, but Milton's "friend and editor" to blame for Sin and Death?

Bentley was a great fan of justifying his excisions by suggesting the gap closes nicely. But even HE did not try to excise Sin and Death from a poem about the origin of sin and death. The fearless editor and scout for all that wasn't Miltonic even shied away from Addison's suggestion to excise the last lines of the poem, opting instead to "improve them."

I apologize for being so tongue-in-cheek, but I'd like to suggest that we should be careful about using Addison's critique of PL as a guide to improve the poem.
