This might have been posted already, but Edward Chaney actually argues in his "Milton's Visit to Vallombrosa: A Literary Tradition" (in: The Evolution of the Grand Tour: Anglo-Italian Cultural Relations since the Renaissance [London: Frank Class, 1998)) that the visit never actually happened, since even at that time the trees were mostly evergreens and even the deciduous parts of the forest kept their foliage until early winter.
