John was an extraordinary person who gave many gifts to our community. He embodied the very best of the profession's values. I know of no other scholar/teacher who has given so much.

All best wishes,
Scott Howard

Yes, Julia, my feelings exactly. And I'll always treasure dancing with him to cajun music in Baton Rouge at the Donne Conference. Elegant, kind, sweet, brilliant, funny, and so giving. His warm smile of greeting, with a little wicked glint in his eye--the best.... God bless, indeed.

And then there was his scholarship . . . .

God bless.

I know of Dr Shawcross only through his writing- yes, he is one of the giants.

I feel the same, Lee. He befriended me in an elevator at my first Milton Dinner (1970!), and remembered me the very next time. He's been a most wonderful friend and colleague over the years. I'm sure there are so many of us who feel immense indebtedness and are grateful for the debt!

John is one of those wonderful Miltonists who befriended me when I was a young beginner and who has remained both friend and mentor ever since. He is indeed very much in my thoughts and prayers. He is one of our giants.

Dear all: John hasn't been doing well, after having suffered a mild stroke a few days ago. He is in hospice care in Lexington and his nephew is with him. I'm sure he'll have been glad to be kept in your thoughts.
