[Milton-L] Re: Milton-L Digest, Vol 53, Issue 9

Another element of longer-term concern that my university has been discussing with other universities, colleges, and high schools is the risk in fruits and vegetables—a particularly interesting conversation at the "home of astronauts" here at Purdue, with its knowledge about freeze-dried and similar types of foods used in space.

Adios,
Angelica

It is not just radiation that is a concern. We have heard from some students at UCLA who have families in Japan that there have been blackouts in Tokyo of several hours a day and food shortages there, and major interruptions to public transportation in the city. It would be good to know how that situation is going to be in the summer before making a final decision about the conference.

Best wishes,

 Dear List Members,
I would like to share some fear that we Brazilians are having about
IMS10. To get the financial support for the event, we have to start
the process now, and, after the disaster in Japan, we are doubtful of
our going. Unfortunately, Japan has suffered a lot and the recovering
of such a disgrace takes time to occur. Besides, there is the risk of
radiation, and of course, we are afraid of the exposure to it. I would
like to know how you are feeling about going to Japan this year. The
IMS10 is an opportunity of learning and meeting all of you, which we
cannot miss. However, we have to confess we are quite insecure. How
about you all, have you been suffering such kind of anxiety? Sorry, if
I am using the forum to discuss such a thing, but we feel that this
may be affecting us all.
I would appreciate if you could do with some help on this issue.
 Special thanks,

I intend to go to Japan, but since I live in Japan's neighbor Korea, my decision
might not carry much weight.

I think that we'll have to see what happens with those reactors. If they should
meltdown completely (though that danger seems past), then I'd reconsider my
intention.

The radiation in Tokyo is rather minor, from what I've read.

Dear Miriam,

Thank you for sharing your concern. I add my thoughts, even though, as some on this list know, I was waiting until about April 15 to draft an e-letter to the organizers to alert them to the behind-the-scenes conversations that lead me to believe that many panelists may begin to decline to attend, either because of personal concerns or the prohibitions of some universities I have not double-checked my university’s current stance yet, but I know they had all study-abroad students return home, without exception. I thought to wait until April 15 because I believed that would give universities and individuals to have more of a sense of the stability of the ground and the nuclear power plant, yet still give the IMSX organizers enough time to find a location, still in Japan, but further from the continuing aftershocks, some still 6.0 magnitude and from the unknown but strong risk of radiation from the nuclear power-plants. Kyoto seems like a good candidate. Once panelists start !
pulling out, there is indeed a snowball effect: why go to a conference when the panels one wanted to attend are cancelled or such?

I hope others will share their thoughts on this important conference to help ensure its success, safety, and strong attendance.

Many thanks.

Miriam,

As you probably know, the organizers sent out a message that they are going to go ahead with plans for the conference but will cancel it if necessary. Unless that happens, I will be going.

Tokyo suffered only light damage from the earthquake. The dangerous radiation area as of 3/15 (the last news story on it that I can find) was within 30 km of the reactor, though the US military moved people its people 50 km away. Tokyo is 250 km away.
