Stella Revard treats Anselm in the line of early Christian theologians who
provide background for Milton's treatment of Satan in the opening chapter
of her book The War in Heaven (Cornell, 1980)

Dear Scholars

has anybody stated the - possibly - direct link of PL to St Anselm's "De
Casu Diaboli" (The Devil's Fall)? It seems to me to be the first, wonderful
attempt to build a dramatic theology based on Satan's psychology. Many
details from Anselm's work have apparently been reworked by Milton, both in
order to honour the Doctor Magnificus and --- to shock him.

Many thanks in advance
