Newton's popularity was amazing. Joanna Picciotto’s “Scientific
Investigations: Experimentalism and Paradisal Return” (2005) records
that Newton sat “for over 20 portraits and busts, of which thousands
of copies were sold” so that “Newton became a brand” (p. 48).
