Don't you see some ambiguity in the line, "eyes fast fixt he stood, as
one who pray'd"?

Seems to be a description of someone who looks like he's praying
without being a direct affirmation that this person is praying.  So,
he may be praying, yes, but he may not -- perhaps he just appears to
be.
