I just enjoyed the pleasure of hearing Jamaica Kincaid speak at
Rollins College for their Winter with the Writers program and she told
an interesting story about her experience with Paradise Lost as a
child.

At about the age of seven, she was required to write out by hand the
opening few chapters of Paradise Lost as punishment for something or
another. She decided at that time she could completely identify with
its main character -- Satan -- especially his "better to rule in hell
than serve in heaven." This stuck with her to the point that as an
adult she introduced a character named "Lucy" after Lucifer in a story
about that period of her life.

She told this story a bit tongue in cheek, but also seemed to mean it...
