What still could not be understood evenn in Pope's day was the
importance of the finnal -e, so it was a widespread opinion that
Chaucer's poems would not scan. Pope: "And such as Chaucer is, shall
Dryden be." (Quoted from memory; my eyes are too far gone to scan
through a text to find a line.)
