Anyone interested in friendship and Milton should also take a look at
Gregory Chaplin’s “‘One Flesh, One Heart, One Soul’: Renaissance
Friendship and Miltonic Marriage” in Modern Philology 99:2 (2001)
266-92. Whereas Tom examines Milton’s investment in friendship
within a broader cultural context, Greg traces it to Milton’s
classically-inspired friendship with Diodati and presents a
compelling argument for the continuity between the Milton-Diodati
material and the marital ideal that Milton develops in the divorce
tracts and Paradise Lost.
