Gordon Wenham's commentary on Gen. 1-11 for Word Biblical Commentary
translates this, "the breeze of the day," saying in the commentary
that this refers to "the afternoon when cool breezes spring up and the
sun is not so scorching" (76). He compares the language of God's
walking to later language about the presence of God in the tent
sanctuary, but doesn't comment on the phrase translated "the breeze of
the day" any further. What really annoying is that he has detailed
notes on every clause in Gen. 3:8 except this one, even the omission
of the definite article before "man" in the Samarian Pentateuch.
