While only peripherally related to Milton, the NY Times today
features an op-ed piece on academic freedom by Stanley Fish in his
current incarnation as a "law professor at Florida International University."

He reminds us that academic freedom is not freedom to say anything at
all, but to study anything at all. Even things most people consider
hoky or ridiculous, such as Holocaust bashing or astrology can be
worthy of study if they illuminate now-outmoded thinking. His example
is that a study of astrology may explain much in, say, Shakespeare,
Dante, and Chaucer. Or that conspiracy theory may yield valuable
insights into events like 9/11.
