If "it's nearly impossible to read Paradise Lost without already having
read it," and the reading in question is a reading before one has
already read it, then you can't test them on it but will have to work
out some other way of determing if they did the reading. Aside from that
difficulty, I agree that it is a _very_ good idea. Also, if you test
them on their knowledge from this "non-reading," you are going to force
them to resort to Cliff Notes etc. instead of doing the valuable
non-reading.
