I think the better question isn't whether Pullman or Gaiman have read 
Milton, but whether Pullman's and Gaiman's readers have.  From my 
experience, unless they attended a Catholic school, probably not, and 
when they do, they generally can't understand much unless guided word by 
word.  Those who have attended Catholic school, on the other hand, have 
read Milton, Dante, etc.
