The campus community is invited to participate in a celebration of Dr.
Martin Luther King's legacy at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 15, in Cannon
Memorial Chapel. A procession from Stern Quadrangle to the Chapel will
be led by Acting Chaplain Kate O'Dwyer Randall and President Cooper at
approximately 1:50 p.m. All are welcome and encouraged to join the
procession. The full program will last until approximately 3:15 p.m.
The keynote address will be delivered by the Rev. James M. Lawson Jr.,
an early teacher of nonviolent resistance and a key figure in the Civil
Rights Movement. Rev. Lawson is currently a distinguished visiting
professor and fellow at the Center for the Study of Religion and Culture
at Vanderbilt University.
Several student groups also will be showcased during the event and
selected reflections on Dr. King will be provided by students, staff and
faculty. A reception co-sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs
will follow in the Gottwald Atrium. Additional information regarding the
celebration can be found online at
http://commonground.richmond.edu/events/MLK2007.htm .
So that students and faculty can participate in the celebration, an
altered class schedule will be in effect (see
http://oncampus.richmond.edu/academics/registrar/schedule/altsched.htm
). Supervisors are encouraged to support staff members' participation in
this campus-wide event.
