Thanks to those who attended yesterday, and we hope to see more of those
of you who were unable to attend.
In brief:
In NLSA we let our members define what 'non-traditional" means, but we
found that most (not all) of our members have spouses/significant others
(usually referred to by me altogether as spouses for simplicity) and
many (though not most) have children.
I think that the key 'determinant' for our membership is that NLSA
members are balancing more aspects of their life
(home/work/family/mortgage/commute), for whatever reason. It is my hope
that NLSA will become, for each member, a resource for maintaining that
balance, or at the very least, finding someone with whom to commiserate
about all the effort.
Activities:
we are looking forward to the following activities for this year
September 28 - Family Down Under (co sponsor with SBA, PILA and WLSA)
We're seeking volunteers to help in the following areas:
4:30-5:00: Set-up
5:00-5:30: Bartending, Popcorn machine,
FACEPAINTING, Moonbounce, Sno Cone Machine
5:30-6:00: Same
6:00-6:30: Same
6:30-7:00: Same
7:00-7:30: Clean-up
We encourage you to bring your family to join in the fun.
October: Event with the CSO, specifics to follow
This is a great networking opportunity with
'non-traditional' speakers and career information
Repeat this is a really wonderful event and we
hope everyone will be able to attend.
November: Morning Coffee event with the Faculty (tentative date November
6 8:00 - 10:30 am)
we'll be looking for volunteers to help set up,
help clean up and help deliver invitations to faculty for this
networking event
"Can't Talk Law" Night Out - (tentatively November 3, 10 or
17 details to follow) keep an eye out for more information on this
Saturday-event-out for law students and spouses/significant others
(single members are included too!).
The name - a product of my brain being faster than my mouth
(for once!) is a working title only - really, we won't talk law we'll
just be people. Out. For an afternoon/evening of fun. It'll be great.
December: Exams
February: Can't Talk Law Night Out II (tbd) If our November event goes
well, we're going for another round.
March: Afternoon Faculty Tea (tentative date March 12, 2-4 pm)
Board Elections:
We are also seeking volunteers for the following positions on the board:
Vice President
Secretary
Treasurer
Also, we are seeking a Spouse Liaison to join our board -- any
volunteers?
Using our Mailing List
We will be using our mailing list for active discussion and I encourage
you to send questions, comments or discussion starters to
nlsa at lists.richmond.edu.
If you like, you can also view the list, or request the list in digest
form at
http://lists.richmond.edu/mailman/listinfo/nlsa
Just in case, I am sending out a quick tutorial on email folder setup
and filtering for your NLSA mail. This is probably not needed for most
of us, but I'm hoping for lots of mail traffic and I don't want you
feeling spammed! :-)
Organization Sponsor:
Finally, for those of you who have not met her, I want to introduce our
group's faculty sponsor, Professor Adrienne Volenik. She was unable to
attend our meeting yesterday due to a scheduling conflict, but she's a
very enthusiastic supporter of NLSA and we hope to see more of her this
year.
If you have any questions - about the meeting please feel free to
contact me off-list or (again, I know) start a discussion here. The BEST
part is that if I've left out anything from yesterday, you all get a
chance to correct me!
Thank you for your participation -- we're looking forward to a great
year.
Cate Pillow
NLSA President
