Hi Valerie,
You have some great concrete non-traditional student needs and
solutions that I wasn't even aware of. I going to forward them to
Jerrell and the Development committee - their purpose is to identify and
solve non-traditional student needs at URSOL. Jerrell's pretty good at
getting things done, so if you have any other ideas, let him know. He
may contact you for more details.
NLSA is not in a very good negotiating position with the admissions
office. We actually approached them and asked if they would put a
letter from NLSA in their mailing, so they are doing NLSA a favor.
I think when Matt asked for quotes and ideas, he included NLSA under
the umbrella of URSOL. If you have any experiences where NLSA or the
school was positive or helpful, let Matt know.
Thanks,
Clinton

I like this idea--but, I find myself wondering about the "quotes from us
on the benefits our school has to offer."
Aside from NLSA, IS the school making an effort to help non-traditional
students? I've made a couple of suggestions to the SBA which have been
received favorably, but have seen no implementation yet: ie, changing
tables for infants; parking passes so parents with small children can
park in the faculty lot when their children are with them.
Also, scheduling: Dean Rahman told me (last year, too late) that if a
non-trad student requested to be put in a section that would make their
lives easier, the admissions office could do so. I had made such a
request of the dean's office, and they refused, but I didn't know that
the admin office had the power to do it, and would have. There are other
scheduling issues too, but that's a major one that could make the life
of a single parent much easier.
So, I think the school needs to come through and not just use a nice
letter from NLSA to draw non-trad students, if indeed they are serious
about wanting them. Can we negotiate and say we'll write the letter,
provide the quotes, be available to make calls, etc--IF the school will
do their part to actually make the school friendlier to students w/kids,
spouses, etc?

Subject: [Nlsa] NLSA Plan to Assist Admissions
Hello! I hope you and your families enjoyed the holidays. I know my
kids certainly did!
Before the break I talked with Dean Rahman about a brochure from NLSA to
aid in admissions. She liked the idea, but pointed out that it takes
quite a while to get a brochure through the development and printing
process while letters can be just as effective. She was very
enthusiastic about our participation in the admissions process and asked
if we could put together a somewhat more comprehensive plan in addition
to any letters we may write. Dean Rahman will cover all expenses.
Therefore, I proposed the following plan to Clinton based on
recommendations from Dean Rahman:
1. By January 23rd, compose a letter to be sent to applicants which
includes information on NLSA, why they should consider choosing URSOL,
quotes from us on the benefits our school has to offer, and an
invitation to attend our March 21st symposium.
a. I am drafting the letter and ask for quotes, ideas and
input from you, please!
2. March 21st Symposium, with lunch provided by admissions.
3. May, 2006. Compose a second letter to deposited applicants with
helpful tips and reassurances that they too can succeed. This letter
may be limited to "non-traditional" applicants only or sent to all who
have sent in their deposit.
4. June/July 2006. Volunteers to call deposited "non-traditional"
applicants to see if they have any questions or if we can help in any
way.
5. August 2006. Staff table at orientation.
Your feedback, comments and assistance would be greatly appreciated!
See you soon,
Matt
