[ModelUN] I will be the UN for Halloween - a light blue superman cape and some white doves in my hair. :D

Hi guys,

I just got done carving my first (and last) pumpkin ever. And it has a
really cool skeleton on it and a bat that tried to fall off but I skewered
it!! Hahah. But now that I've successfully dealt with that, I can send you
priceless MUN info.

I'll start with a couple of non-UPMUNC things that I forgot to mention at
the meeting today:

We have 2 opportunities to earn money and gain publicity for our beloved
organization. The first one is MSU's Challenge. I have no idea what it is,
but we need a team of 3 club members to compete on Nov. 17th (Sat) at 8:00pm
in the Pier, and the 1st prize is $200. It may not sound like a lot, but for
our miserly annual budget, it's actually quite a bit, and we could have fun
with it, so please let me know if you're interested. The second (similar)
opportunity is the Homecoming Committee's Field Day on Friday, Nov. 2nd
(4-6pm), which would involve us setting up an activity station (such as a
three-legged race or blindfold banana-eating contest) and also competing at
other organizations' events to try and get the largest number of points and
win another $200. We would then have a total of $400 of "discretionary
spending." :p Haha. So again, let me know if you're interested. Both of
these are really good ways to show people we exist!! (And they seem like
good study breaks.)

We also need a web master who would have to build us a simple, yet
functional and attractive website and then update it once every couple of
months or so.

Finally, Mark and I will be working on scheduling a fun little social event
sometime in the near future (mostly as pre-UPMUNC bonding, but anyone from
the club is invited), so be on the lookout for that and let us know if you
have creative ideas about it.

As for UPMUNC things:

We have 2 weeks to prepare!!! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah!! So start ASAP.

First of all, committee assignments:

Mary and Phil: SocHum
Anna and Pablo: Environmental Sustainability
Scott: Human Rights
Nick: SpecPol
Carter and Jen: DiSec
Mark: SciTech
Dana: Russian Cabinet 2020 - Commander of the Navy
Me: Sustainable Development

There will be background guides for SocHum and Env'tal Sustainability in the
Model UN mailbox behind Student Activities tomorrow, but there is only one
of each, so for those of you who get there late - you can print one out from
upmunc.org, user name: urmun, password: spiders. As I mentioned at the
meeting, these are just to get you started on the research - they are by no
means exhaustive. Remember that the more you know about your country and the
issue, the more confident you will be when addressing your committee. Also,
double delegations might be more effective if you split your research by
topic, but make sure to update each other on what's going on. Over the next
couple of weeks, be on the lookout for prayer rugs and gadgets that indicate
where Mecca is. :p

Hm... I think I'm forgetting something important. Oh, Jen, (if you've read
this far), you're good to go as far as attending the conference! :D

And now I need some sleep. So stop reading, and start researching! :p

Good night, may you dream of world peace,
RD
