Diane,
I believe that MLA recommends citing the author's name, the title of the post (if it has one), the title of the list to which it was posted, the date of the posting, and then a URL where it can be accessed.
So, if I were to list your post on a Works Cited page or in a bibliography, the citation would look like this:
McColley, Diane. "Citing." Online post. Milton-l. May 21, 2009. http://lists.richmond.edu/pipermail/milton-l/2009-May/009583.html
I think that Chicago asks you to also include the date on which you last accessed the page in parentheses after the URL: "(last accessed June 30, 2009)."
The URL above will take a reader to the copy of your post that resides in the Milton-l archive. You can copy a URL like this for any Milton-l post by going to the Milton-l homepage and clicking on the "Archives" link. Once you get to the archives, you can find the post you want by date, thread, author, or subject line.
The link for the homepage is at the bottom of most posts.
Louis

Subject: [Milton-L] Citing
Is there a protocol for quoting and citing from Milton-List entries? I
would not quote anything without asking the author's permission
privately of course--one may say things in a discussion that one would
rather not see in print--but sometimes a letter or a string of letters
is so pertinent to one's subject that one would like to refer to it.
Does one need to mention the listmaster, the place of origin, and such?
