Both the exceptions Alan Horn mentions were like the Ismaili Assassins committed to murders after which they must accept the inevitability of death.

If you're looking at nationalist and religious motives, Japanese suicide attacks during WW II are relevant: I don't think the uniforms are important. The original Assassins did not die in explosions but they were expected to be killed inevitably, and were honoured for the self-sacrifice.
Rajiv Gandhi was killed in a targeted suicide bombing, I think one of
the first in history, by a (female) member of the Sri Lanka-based
Tamil Tigers, the group mentioned earlier.
Neither Indira Gandhi nor Mohandas Gandhi were assassinated in suicide attacks.
