To my fallible eye, the following doctrines are not only not equivalent, but not compatible:

(1) The primary if not sole determinant of utterance meaning is the intention of the utterer.

(2) The sole determinant of utterance meaning is C. (Consult the parable for my definition of C.)

I hold, for better or worse, that (1) is false and (2) is unwelcome and inconvenient but true.
