Call for Essays

“Milton, Liberalism, and Religious Violence: Influences and
Consequences”

The idea for this volume has emerged from a two-day symposium on the
topic of “Milton Alive at 400: Samson Agonistes and Religious
Violence,” recently held at the University of Miami and Florida
International University to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the
birth of John Milton.

In keeping with our approach to the symposium, we are seeking essays
in a variety of disciplines, not just literary studies, but also in
fields like political science, religious studies, legal studies,
anthropology, sociology, and history. While we expect the volume to
include contributions on Milton’s writings (not limited to Samson),
we seek to produce a collection that combines this more specific
focus with a wider perspective that includes biblical literature and
other early modern literature.

Tentative sections will include:

Interdisciplinary Analyses of Religion, Politics, and Violence

Religion and Violence in Milton’s Bible

Religious Violence in Early Modern Literature

Submissions should be approximately 5000 words in length. Please
include your name, phone numbers, email address, surface mail
address, and institutional affiliation.

Send submissions as attachments (Word, RTF, PDF formats are
acceptable) or in hard copy to:
