I have just been reading a months worth of Milton List posts. I only  
knew Al Labriola through a few brief emails in which he was very  
helpful and very kind. Reading about him has been thunderously moving.

As to L'Allegro and Il Penseroso, I think they are in constant  
quarrel, as in "We make out of the quarrel with others, rhetoric, but  
of the quarrel with ourselves, poetry."—William Butler Yeats, "Anima  
Hominis."
