Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Word of Al Labriola's passing has just reached me.  I am shocked and profoundly 
saddened by this most unwelcome news.  It is very hard for me to imagine the world of 
Milton scholarship without Al Labriola presiding over it as the Milton Society's Attendant 
Spirit, full of humane wisdom and grace.  Without Al's organizational brilliance and 
attention to detail, his good humor, his intellectual generosity, and his pure selflessness, 
the international community of scholars who deal with John Milton could not possibly have 
become what it is.  As I read the tributes and expressions of grief that have already come 
through on the Milton list, I am moved by the shared sense of loss that they convey.  Al 
Labriola made of his life a gift to everyone who knew him.  My heartfelt condolences go 
out to his family and to all those who are closest to him.
