I checked with Robert Alter (ad fontes!), and it turns out Crumb did indeed
arrange to use Alter's translation, with the proviso that he could revert to
the KJV when he wished. For some reason known only to them (or not) the New
Yorker printed the text unattributed. I've written them a brief note
querying this.
All that said, I still look forward to seeing the rest of Crumb's work, and
I'm glad everything is above board between him and Alter.
