Alan Rudrum objects to doing Mr. Carroll's thinking
for him, then directs Mr. Carroll to four sources
(three of them by Alan Rudrum), and tells Mr.
Carroll that he can safely ignore two prominent
Miltonists as "revisionist."

While we're on the topic of feeble apologies, what
does anyone on this
list think about the fascinating feeble apology
that Delila makes to
Samson in SA? Why does she bother and why is
Samson so stinting in his
forgiveness? Any thoughts about this topic would
be much welcomed!

It is not clear to me why we should be doing your
thinking for you; but you might find it useful to
do some reading. Here are some suggestions:
Arnold Stein, Heroic Knowledge, Univ of Minnesota
Press, 1957. The classic treatment.
Alan Rudrum, A Critical Commentary on Milton's
Samson Agonistes, Macmillan, London, 1969.
Alan Rudrum, "Discerning the Spirit in Samson
Agonistes," in Charles W. Durham, eds, "All in
All," Unity Diversity and the Miltonic
Perspective, SUP, 1999.

There is revisionist stuff by Joseph Wittreich and
Derek Wood, but both may safely be ignored, for
reasons which you will find in the following:
Alan Rudrum,:Milton Scholarship and the Agon over
Samson Agonistes, in the Huntington Library
Quarterly, Vol. 65 (2002), Nos. 3 and 4, (2002)
(which actually came out rather later)
