[Milton-L] Milton

I have corresponded with Mr. and Mrs. Kirmss privately. Arthur is in his 60s, and when he is not carving or sculpting, he is the curator of one of the oldest Dutch houses in the New York metropolitan area. He doesn't have a scholar's knowledge of Milton. Rather, he was inspired by Milton's poetry, and meant nothing ironic or disrespectful by his rendering. From that perspective, no matter what we might say about the piece technically, it deserves our appreciation---and respect, as a labor of love. To my mind, the most unfortunate thing about it is the venue in which it is being displayed--and the fact that McGrath included a photograph of it in his article with the apparent intent of conveying the grotesqueries of that event. More that likely, his omission of the description intended to accompany the sculpture was intentional . . . because that would have removed it immediately from the realm of the merely Daliesque.

Best to all,

Carol Barton
