Mr. Kirmss does not assume any pre-knowledge of
Western and non-Western art and cultures on the part
of the viewer. An explanatory text appears beside the
installation of his work.
The sage sculptor has cleverly fused facets of several
artistic traditions across the ages and cultures into his
unique work. He did not set out to merely replicate a
17th-century English sculpture that can be found in the
galleries of the V&A.
It's interesting to note that a number of the paintings
in this grand three-story installation are influenced by
multiple cultures, only in two dimensions. They also
represent aspects of John Milton. Yet Mr. Kirmss' bust
remains the sole fascinating interpretation of what Milton
may have looked like.
There ARE lasting visual symbols that are universal across
cultures. Some of the earliest ones, sexual in nature, can be
found in ancient Near Eastern and pre-dynastic Egyptian
pottery. These same potent images undeniably persist in art
to this very day.
Yes, you ARE viewing a color photograph of the work out of
context. And it's entirely NOT the artist's fault.
