If part of the assessed work is a reflective journal, it can be stipulated
that students' reflections be on works or authors or genres which are
outside any narrow selection, or outside the textbook itself.  Same if the
assessment includes making an anthology of each student's own.
     There are many other advantages to both forms of assessment,
naturally.
