Subject: [Milton-L] Information on Milton's Grand Tour
Dear Carl,
Just back from a holiday I will answer your question now.
All I know about the books Milton shipped home from Venice is I am afraid nothing new,
Barbara Lewalski in her The Life of John Milton (2003) writes: 'Edward Phillips states that the books Milton shipped home from Venice included 'a chest or two of choice Musick-books of the best Masters flourishing about at that time in Italy' (The Early Lives of Milton, ed. Helen Darbishire). He specifies Luca Marenzio, Caudio Monteverdi, Orazio Vecchi, Antonio Cifra, Don Carlo Gesualdo the Prince of Venosa, and 'several others'- some of the most distinguished music of the time."(Lewalski 106)
What I know about these composers is that they have one thing in common: they all composed - among other things - madrigals.
Best regards,
Enna Martina.
