Dear D. Gomez,

I am a little confused by the use of ³valid² in the assignment: I will
replace it with ³interesting² or ³important.² I will throw out an idea that
piggybacks on your China idea: tracking the international travel of the
liberal ideas of the work through the availability of translations, with a
focus on Chinese because of its global population growth and Spanish because
of its population growth in the U.S., not necessarily when the first
translations were available in such-and-such a language, but rather how
readily available they are today. Closer to home, you could look up on the
WorldCat electronic catalogue, likely available through your school, the
countries of origin for publications of Chinese and Spanish translations of
Areopagitica. For example, at first Latin American countries imported texts
from Spain but eventually set up their own printing presses and procured
enough native talent, the peace needed for day-to-day activities, etc., to
create their own translations.

Since Spanish is one of the most second popular languages in the U.S.,
perhaps you have some basic knowledge of Spanish and could even see if you
could find a copy for a future project, if you do not have enough of a
time-frame right now. You could see how accurate a Spanish translation it
is. Perhaps you are lucky enough to know Chinese ‹ just yesterday, I waxed
somber on my lack of knowledge of that language.

I happen to be teaching a course on censorship this semester, with Milton
featured of course. I can¹t boil down a semester¹s worth of information
into an already long email. Best of luck.

Adios,

Subject: [Milton-L] Milton in our century

Dear all,

I am a British literature student and I have been asked to write about to
what extend Areopagitica can be valid in our century. I have come up with
certain ideas that I would like to share with you all but I would appreciate
if you could also share with me whatever comes to your mind. Even the
smallest tips may help me much. Here we go:

1. To me, it is not only a political tract addressed to the Parliament in
order to obtain press freedom, freedom of speechŠ
2. Influence of Areopagitica in constitutions all over the world: the USA
(1st Ammendment: freedom of speech), Spain, PolandŠ
3. Elaborate on the idea that censorship reduces freedom.
4. XXI century and the new systems of communication: Internet . Do filters
violate the freedom Milton preached?
5. Milton urges to read from all sources s the way to get to know the truth.
However, in this era of Internet, to what extent is his point of view
practical or wise?
6. What about yellow press? Should it be forbidden ? or perhaps, should
their topics be controlledŠif not censored?
7. What about ³parental filters² on the net? Do they violate our peoples
rights as they do not allow them to have full access to certain sources of
information?
8. Books and Internet censorship in China and other countries. Is this a
wise point of view in order to maintain the country united and free from
corrupted sources (rampant materialism everywhere, pornography, yellow
pressŠ)? Or perhaps full individual freedom should be reached at any cost?,
Which way may bring more values to the citizen and to the nations?
9. The ³watch-dog² entity: beneficial or a rights breaker? What would have
said Milton about it?

Thank you very much

D Gomez
