[Milton-L] Justify God?

At the risk of being a self-promoter, I have done some work with this question. In The Tyranny of Heaven, I consider the question of justification in the light of accusation and (attempted) acquittal.

I work with the portrayal of "God" through the lens of negative theology in the two recent works below:

"A Poem to the Unknown God: Samson Agonistes and Negative Theology." Milton Quarterly, Vol. 42, No. 1, 2008, 22-43.

"The Mysterious Darkness of Unknowing: Paradise Lost and the God Beyond Names." In Paradise Lost: A Poem Written in Ten Books." Essays on the 1667 First Edition. Eds. John Shawcross and Michael Lieb (Duquesne UP, 2007), 183-212

I disagree with Empson when he argues that Milton is trying to make God appear less wicked. I think, and argue, that Milton is trying to separate representations of the deity from the deity itself. His poetic "God" is not God. But then, neither is Yahweh...

I'm sending this from my phone (traveling today), so the formatting may be off. If so, my apologies.
