>>The name of the author resonated but faintly with me, and upon a quick googling I found that he was a playwright and director of a regional theatre at Birmingham.<<
The Birmingham Repertory Theatre (my home city theatre, still flourishing). He was involved in its foundation as well as being a Director - some further information can be found at http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/GenerateContent?CONTENT_ITEM_ID=57216&CONTENT_ITEM_TYPE=0&MENU_ID=13146 (he was not however the founder as Drabble's OCEL incorrectly states).

Among his other works was a study of Byron (The Pilgrim of Eternity) which I understand was one of the first serious attempts to recover Byron from Victorian obscurity(so he had excellent taste).
