Helmer Helmers is working for his PhD on "Vondel and Milton: an old problem in a new perspective"
Vondel wrote his great tragedy Lucifer in 1654 which is about war in Heaven and the fall of the rebel-angels; he also wrote about Samson which is a dramatisation of the Book of Judges 13-16. (there is a translation in English of Lucifer; it was on this list)

Helmers' aim is to show that the common ground between the works of the two poets was part of the English-Dutch political discours which influenced the literature of the 1650's.

Helmer Helmers is attached to Leiden University in The Netherlands - he won a first prize with his M.A. thesis. Has published among other things a paper on "The English Devil".

  Hello list-

  I'm looking for some good books on Satan, and would appreciate some recommendations. 

  Years ago I read a couple by Jeffrey Burton Russell and found them quite interesting, and many of my friends believe him to be the go-to guy old the subject of Ol Scratch (I guess in one I didn't read he deals with Milton's Satan for several pages). 

  Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, but my 'free' reading time is very limited these days because I have so much required reading to do for classes so I'm looking only for "the best".
