'Dear list members,

There is a call for papers on figures of monsters and monstrosity in literature in Brazil and we thought about having a paper on this theme and Paradise Lost. We would like to know if any of you could suggest bibliographical references on such theme, figures of monsters or monstrosity on Paradise Lost.'

I´d start with the chapters ‘Milton and Monsters’ and, also, ‘Monsters and Men’ from Diane Purkiss’ (Oxford University) book titled Literature, Gender and Politics During the English Civil War (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2005). You could also take a look (unlikely to be unprofitable, I´m sure) at the articles ‘Exploring the Universe with John Milton and Mary Shelley by David Poston’ (The English Journal, Vol. 78, No. 7 Nov., 1989, pp. 28-33) and ‘Monsters in Eden: Darwin and Derrida’ by Colin Nazhone Milburn (the latter, although on Derrida, whose theories are not really my cuppa tea, provides interesting mentions to Milton). All of these references are up-to-date enough to deem monsters in the broadest sense encompassing spatial, urban and political manifestations of monstrosity, so to speak.

  Best of luck,

  Erick Ramalho
