Following is the report that I sent to our faculty with the participation stats for our 4th annual marathon reading here at Collins Hill High School last Saturday:
This year (marathon #4 - March 2008), we had 4 adults who spent a total of 42 hours, 2 former students who spent a total of 4 hours and 57 current students who spent a total of 203.6 hours which adds up to a total of 249.6 man hours reading the poem. We started reading at 9:00 and finished at 7:45 ( 63 total participants ).This year was our best ever, both in total participants and in man hours devoted to the task (appropriate for the 400th anniversary of Milton's birth). I have really enjoyed seeing the growth of this event. It gives our kids the opportunity to peek at some rather unique scholarship.
To demonstrate the growth of the event -

In Marathon #1 in March of 2005, we had 8 adults, 1 former student and 18 current students who spent a total of 89 man hours reading the poem. We started at 9:00 in the morning and finished at 7:40. ( 27 total participants ) In marathon #2 in March of 2006 we had 8 adults who spent 47 hours, 4 former students who spent 15.5 hours and 33 current students who spent 41.5 hours which adds up to a total of 104 man hours reading the poem. We started at 9:00 and finished at 7:45. ( 45 total participants )Last year (marathon #3 - March 2007) we had 6 adults who spent a total of 40 hours, 3 former students who spent a total of 24.2 hours and 16 current students who spent a total of 73.2 hours which adds up to a total of 137.4 man hours reading the poem. We started at 9:00 and finished at 7:50. ( 25 total participants ).Greg Lowe
