Carol -- I'm working with a visiting Blake scholar flying in to
Orlando from Ediburgh, which should be a more expensive flight than
into London. Best deal I found was on Orbitz.com for $1151 US round
trip, two stops. $1000 to London sounds a bit high, but I'm not sure
where you're flying in from.
Flying from Orlando to Grenoble for the 2005 conference, I found a
great deal from NYC to Geneva -- something less than $600 round trip
-- so then just needed a cheap flight from Orlando to NYC, which isn't
hard to find. I took the train from Geneva to Grenoble. It pays to
be a little creative. It's also -very important- not to fly in or out
on Sunday -- fares will be ridiculous. For this kind of flight, we're
talking perhaps another $300-$500 more.
Off season flights to London can be very inexpensive, sometimes less
than $400. I'm not able to attend this Milton conference this year
(this academic year I did/am doing MLA, CCCCs, and ASECS -- I'm tapped
out) so I'm not sure of the dates. Just be sure to try Travelocity,
Orbitz, and Expedia, and try alternate dates or airports,
Good luck :)
