would think JameEla Lares might be of help, given her interest in sermons.

Thanks, Boyd. Carol and Conrad have already made just about all the
suggestions I could make. I will add, however, that I wish there were a
database listing the TEXT of scripture for various sermons, since English
Reformation sermons depended on the pattern laid down on the Continent, to read
a text out of the canonical scriptures (e.g., Lamentations 1.10), explain its
context and meaning, and then draw out "doctrines" from it that could then be
"used" or applied to the life of the believer. One might have good luck
searching such a database for sermons on potentially useful verses, such as
Romans 7:23, which has references to all three of your search terms: "But I
see another law in my members, warring [passion] against the law of my MIND,
and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members [i.e.,
BODY]."

I did a quick look at EEBO and found the following:

1. Barlow, John. The good mans refuge in affliction. Or A most profitable and
comfortable sermon, preached by Iohn Barlovv. And now published especially for
the good of them that bee, or haue been afflicted inwardly in minde, or

3. Cave, John. Christian tranquility, or, The government of the passions of
joy and grief in a sermon preached at Shenton in Leicestershire, upon the
occasion of the much lamented death of that hopeful young gentleman, Mr.
Francis Wollatson ... / by John Cave ... , London : Printed for R. Chiswell

7. Hodges, Thomas. Inaccessible glory, or, The impossibility of seeing Gods

8. Neville, Robert. Ta ano the things above proved to be the most proper

There's more to find on EEBO, of course. This was just a quick search with
"Sermon" as a title keyword position + any of your three keywords.

One CAN search for scripture text on the John Donne sermon database at BYU. See
at http://www.lib.byu.edu/dlib/donne/. Yes, Donne is a default value, but a
good one. His sermon "Death's Duell" kept coming up in my quick EEBO search.

Cheers,

Jameela
