Well, certainly, Hannibal you can (read: have to) do that, too, for many 
students, just to teach Books I and IX. Particularly in survey classes, most 
students seem to come to class equipped for reading limericks and Dr. Seuss 
(and not much more). I will never forget the student who 
complained--vociferously--about being utterly incapable of deciphering 
Browning's "My Last Duchess."

I asked him to read the poem to the class.

"THAT's my last DUCH-ess HANG-ing ON the WALL . . ."

I didn't have to hear much more to understand where the bulk of his problem 
lay.
