There were a number of subjects I "hated" when I was in high 
school--most memorably, history--and I've have used terms similar to 
the ones your wife's student used, describing why I felt that way.

I would hardly say that now.

I also "hated" Henry James' "Beast in the Jungle" as an 
undergrad--stupid story in which NOTHING HAPPENS.

Precisely. But sometimes, you have to be a little older than 18 to 
understand why that's the point.
