One good resource for classical sources is the Perseus site at
www.perseus.tufts.edu. Always assuming that the site is available, click on
classical texts at the top left and then you can look alphabetically for Homer
and Virgil's epics, available in both the original languages and English. (If
the site is not available, it is often possible to find the English text via
googling. I am assuming you don't know Greek or Latin, but if you do, even
better.)
Salmasius is the French scholar whom Milton answers in his First Defense, etc.
One good study of the bees can be found in Karen L. Edwards, Milton and the
Natural World (Cambridge University Press, 1999, though Edwards is focusing on
the bees as understood by the natural history of Milton's time. If memory
serves, she talks about both Salmasius's treatment and the bee simile. I hope
you've got the book at your library.
