This weekend saw the first complete reading aloud of Paradise Lost at
the University of Copenhagen, Amager. Having arranged such readings
several times in Oslo I was invited to talk about Eve's Dinner-Party and
be there for the reading, which was the best I have experienced since
the readers had really practiced their 'portions' beforehand. We had
homegrown apples off the tree ( Coxes do grow in Copenhagen) and used
the student canteen , which was a comfortable alternative to the usual
classroom. There were about 25 present: friends, family, colleagues and
students, a good mix. The reading lasted 11 1/2 hours.
Additionally, the head of the International School in Copenhagen had
put on the whole of Bk IX using masks at the Edinburgh festival, and was
present on Saturday to help read, which gave the occasion a real lift.
The academic head of the English dept. at the university, Prof. Charles
Lock, sent the following self-penned poem afterwards, entitled
Afterthanks:
If more I wrote, in prose or rhyme, the verse
In rhythm blank to tell would far exceed
The need, brief as such message ought to be
When not by archangelic tongue pronounced.
