[Envstudies-list] Biology 207 and 210

As you may know, the biology department is changing their curriculum.
Eventually Biol 210 (Integrative Biol 1) will cease to exist and will no
longer be offered. It will be "replaced" by Biol 207, which will be a
straight ecology course.

How does this effect ES majors and minors?

The major and minor both have an "Env Life Science" requirement. In the
past, the requirement was fulfilled by either Biol 109 OR Biol 210. From
now on it will be fulfilled by either Biol 109 or Biol 207. You should
not count on Biol 109 being offered with any regularity, so Biol 207 is
your best bet. Biol 210 will also be discontinued.

However (you didn't think it was that easy, did you?)...

Biol 207 at this time requires Biol 199. That course is required of all
biology majors/minors BUT NOT ES MAJORS/MINORS. You don't have to take
the course; in fact, the course is reserved for incoming freshmen.
However, in order to take Biol 207 you will need to get an override from
the biology department. You should do this BEFORE your registration
rotation. Malcolm Hill is the one to see.

I am trying to get the biology department to accept Envr 201 as a
prerequisite (as they have for Biol 210) but it hasn't happened yet.

Biol 210 will be offered next semester. If you are getting a Biology
major or minor, then the biology department usually wants you to
continue with the "old" curriculum. That means you should take Biol 210
if you haven't already done so. This course will fulfill the Env Life
Science requirement of the ES major/minor, so if you have taken it, you
don't need to take Biol 207. Note again that Biol 210 will not be
offered in the future. If you have any questions about the biology
major/minor then you should talk to someone in biology.

I know it is confusing. Bottom line:

n If you plan on taking Biol 207 next semester, GET AN OVERRIDE from
Biology (Malcolm Hill) before you register.

n Biol 210 also fulfills the same ES requirement. If you have already
taken it, great: no need to take Biol 207.

Let me know if you have any questions about this. Again, if you want to
make an advising appointment with me, go to

and pick a time.
